Do The Cubs Have The Best Trio Of Prospects In Baseball?
(CBS) With a young roster and an offseason devoid of any big-name signings, expectations are low for the Cubs in 2014. So understandably, Cubs fans are often left to turn their attention to the future, of what's on the horizon when the who's-who of prospects finally arrives.
Which begs the question: Do the Cubs have the best trio of prospects in all the minor leagues? A couple guys at MLB.com argued about it, with writer Jonathan Mayo suggesting the Cubs' triumvirate of infielder Javier Baez, third baseman/outfielder Kris Bryant and outfielder Albert Almora is the best of all.
"Put Baez at third and Bryant in right field to get both in the lineup," Mayo wrote. "Combined, that's about 75 home runs and more than 200 RBIs annually coming to Chicago soon."
"(Almora's) going to be an up-the-middle player, the kind of everyday center fielder winning teams seem to have."
Baez is rated as MLB.com's No. 7 prospect, Bryant is No. 9 and Almora is No. 18. The Cubs' biggest competition, Mayo writes, is the Twins, who have top-rated outfielder Byron Buxton and the No. 4 prospect in third baseman Miguel Sano.
