Do Cubs Fans Need To Be 'Convinced' To Go To Wrigley?

CHICAGO (WSCR) This season's Wrigley Field attendance has seen a roughly eight percent decrease from a season ago. While some of that could be attributed to the poor weather, there seems to be a trend developing.

Every season since 2008, the average attendance at Wrigley field has dropped. The average attendance in 2008 was 40,743, so far in 2011 it's 34,818.

"I do think the last couple of years, coming into the season...I didn't detect a lot of expectations for the Cubs team," Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci said on the Mully and Hanley Show. "It was more of 'OK, now you have to show us. You start winning games, we'll start coming back, but you really have to win us back, in terms of coming to the ballpark.'

"And that's where the dynamic has changed a little bit at Wrigley, since 2003. I think there's expectations on a Cubs team. It's not just enough to say, you know, 'day game at 1:10 today,' and people will come out and sit in the sun. They need to see a competitive team, and I think they have to be convinced."

Despite seeing their numbers drop, the Cubs have been in the top five in attendance from 2008 through this point in the 2011 season.
