Discovery Of Ammunition Prompts Lockdown At Hinsdale Central
(STMW) -- A student at Hinsdale Central High School was detained Friday after school officials found a piece of live ammunition on school grounds, prompting a brief lockdown.
School officials and police issued the lockdown about 11:45 a.m. after someone found the piece of ammunition, which had been left in the cafeteria, according to a joint statement from Hinsdale Police and School District 86.
Investigators determined there was no danger to students or staff and the lockdown was lifted about 1:20 a.m., the statement said.
Students and staff "sheltered in place," during that time, police said previously. Classes continued, but movement inside and outside the building was restricted.
A 15-year-old boy who authorities believe brought the ammunition to school was detained Friday afternoon, the statement said. He did not have any weapons in his possession, and no charges have been filed.
The school district is also looking to improve its communication with parents in the wake of Friday's events.
"District 86 is aware that some of our families may not have received communications that were emailed about today's events," the statement said. "We apologize for any confusion this may have caused and are looking into a swift resolution to the issue."
