Disbarred Attorney Gets Nearly 6 Years For $2.3M Fraud
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Burr Ridge woman has been sentenced to almost six years in federal prison for stealing the life savings of an Oak Park couple to invest in a gold mine.
Kathleen Niew, 59, was an attorney. She also had a financial advice show on the radio, and was an author and seminar speaker.
A couple years ago, everything started going down the drain.
She ended up pleading guilty to stealing more than $2.3 million from a suburban couple; money they thought she was going to invest in commercial real estate.
Instead, it went to a gold mine, which went belly up.
The couple lost everything.
Niew lost her law license and her radio show.
In two months she is required to start her 70-month prison sentence.
