Disability Advocates Protest Budget Cuts

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM) -- Organizations that help the disabled in Illinois live independently are making a push to ward off budget cuts.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Dave Dahl reports, Ann Ford, who is confined to a wheelchair because of polio, is in charge of a statewide network of centers for independent living.

Gov. Pat Quinn has proposed eliminating funding for the disabled, and Ford says the governor is not only cheating the disabled, but also being untrue to himself.

"We think that the governor violates his own stated beliefs and his own stated priorities by making these cuts, and it is our intention to work with the governor, with the General Assembly, and try to get those cuts not included in next year's budget," Ford said.

The decision of how to make other cuts or raise revenue, Ford says, is the job of the General Assembly.
