Police: Woman Threatens Two Men With Sharp Object, Steals Amazon Delivery Truck With Driver Inside On Devon Avenue In West Rogers Park
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation Thursday after police said she threatened two men with a sharp object, and then hijacked an Amazon delivery truck with the driver still inside, along Devon Avenue in West Rogers Park.
Police said at 1:13 p.m., the 24-year-old woman took out an unspecified sharp object and threatened two men, ages 41 and 43, on the street in the 2600 block of West Devon Avenue.
She then stole a nearby Amazon delivery truck and fled, only to be caught by police and placed into custody a few blocks away in the 6700 block of North Maplewood Avenue.
The Amazon truck crashed into multiple parked cars and a tree before the woman was apprehended.
Alejandra Flores' car was hit by the hijacked Amazon truck.
"There was an Amazon truck that got carjacked. They lost control, I guess?" Flores said. "I honestly have no idea. And then, there was a couple cars here that were crashed into, including mine."
Meanwhile, witnesses heard the commotion and ran to check it out.
"That's when the Amazon guy was like, 'She stole the Amazon truck,' and that's when I see the police coming down – and I was just waving for them to hurry up so he can come get her before she took off running," one woman said, "and then he came, and then she said: 'I have a gun! I have a gun!' after the police were trying to go after her."
The woman then tripped in the street, and was taken to AMITA Health St. Francis Hospital in Evanston for a mental health evaluation.
The Amazon driver was injured, but is expected to recover.
