Devin Hester Denies Report He Received Cash, Gifts In College
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago Bears wide receiver Devin Hester on Tuesday denied even knowing a University of Miami booster who claims he gave Hester cash and other gifts while Hester was enrolled at the University of Miami.
The allegations of cash and gifts was made in an investigative report by Yahoo! Sports.
According to the story, Miami booster Nevin Shapiro provided Hester with cash bonuses, money for an engagement ring, NBA playoff tickets and other gifts.
"I didn't know the guy," Hester said after Tuesday's practice in Bourbonnais. "I have nothing to say about it."
However, the Yahoo! Sports story includes photos of Hester with Shapiro in 2003.
Accepting gifts from boosters is a violation of NCAA rules. According to Yahoo! Sports, Shapiro claims he provided cash and gifts to more than 70 Hurricanes players.
Shapiro is serving a 20-year prison sentence for running an illegal Ponzi scheme.
