Detroit Lions' New President Admits He's Not Qualified To Run An NFL Team -- Except For The Lions

(CBS) The Detroit Lions recently cleaned house, firing president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew in early November amid what's now a 2-7 season.

On Friday, the Lions formally introduced Rod Wood as their new president. He then promptly uttered a line for the ages.

"I would probably say that I'm not qualified to run any other NFL team, but I think I'm qualified to run this one," Wood said, according to Detroit Free Press writer Dave Birkett.

For context, Wood is the former CEO of Ford Estates and was a vice president of wealth management for the Wilmington Trust Company, according to ESPN.com. So his background isn't in football, which is what he was referencing, and he's being asked to handle business matters, not make football decisions.

Still, the quote aptly sums up a franchise that's long been mired in futility.

In better news, Wood realizes he and the Lions' leadership need some help in hiring a new general manager, saying an advisor will be brought on.
