Des Plaines Police Defend Officers Who Shot Man Dead
DES PLAINES, Ill. (CBS) -- Des Plaines police are defending the officers who shot and killed a man last weekend, saying he tried to kill them.
As WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, the common-law wife of Carlos Salgado, 44, is suing in U.S. District Court, accusing police of excessive force and alleging the shooting that killed Salgado was unprovoked, the Daily Herald reported.
In a statement, Des Plaines police countered that Salgado tried to run down the two officers after they pulled him over in a parking lot on Sunday. Had Salgado survived, police say he would have been charged with attempted murder, among other offenses, the newspaper reported.
Salgado's common-law wife, Tracie Salgado, tells the Daily Herald her husband was a devoted stay-at-home father. But police tell the newspaper he was a gang member with a history of drug and weapons violations.
Police shot Salgado at 3:12 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot in the 1900 block of East Touhy Avenue in Des Plaines. Salgado, of the 400 block of West Touhy Avenue in Des Plaines, was pronounced dead at the scene.
