Two Injured After High-Speed Crash In Des Plaines
CHICAGO (CBS) -- After more than five hours of searching a northwest suburban forest preserve, police found the second victim injured in a high-speed crash in Des Plaines.
The driver of a white Lexus sedan lost control of the car around 2:20 a.m. at Rand and Ballard roads, hit a utility pole and an electrical box, and skidded across the street into a ditch in a wooded area.
A woman who was trapped in the vehicle was rescued from the car, and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in serious condition.
The victim told rescue crews two other people had been in the car with her, prompting a five-hour search of the woods, using flashlights and police K-9s.
Eventually, police determined only one other person was in the car at the time of the crash. He was located in the parking lot of a nearby business. He was bloody, and was not wearing any shoes or a jacket.
That man was taken to the hospital for treatment. He could face criminal charges.
"I believe charges will be pending; as to what exactly they are, at this time we don't know," Des Plaines Police Officer Michael Heidkamp said. "We have an accident reconstructionist working right now to try and verify all the details of the crash itself. As to how long this takes, it's going to take as long as it takes."
Rand Road remained closed between Miner Street and Elk Boulevard as of 11 a.m., while police continued their investigation.
ComEd has restored service to the vast majority of the 300 homes and businesses that lost power when the car hit a pole and utility box.
