Derailed Freight Train Causes Metra Delays, Cancellations
CICERO, Ill. (STMW) -- A freight train derailment in west suburban Cicero Monday night has caused service disruptions on Metra's BNSF Line that have lasted into the Tuesday morning commute.
The BNSF Railway freight train was crossing over three tracks near Cicero Avenue when it derailed Monday about 10 p.m., Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said. He said three outbound and two inbound scheduled trains on Metra's BNSF Line were affected.
Two morning trains have been canceled altogether, according to a service alert posted to the Metra website. Trains 1216—which was scheduled to depart the Highlands station in Hinsdale at 6:38 a.m. and arrive at Union Station at 7:03 a.m.—and 1244—which was scheduled to depart the Hollywood station in Brookfield at 7:45 a.m. and arrive at Union Station at 8:17 a.m.—will not operate Tuesday morning.
Train 1238, which is scheduled to depart the Westmont station at 7:28 a.m., will add stops normally made by train 1244, according to the alert.
Commuters can expect delays averaging 20 to 30 minutes.
