DePaul To Close Loop Campus For NATO/G8 Summits
CHICAGO (CBS) -- DePaul University will close its Loop campus during the NATO and G8 summits in May.
In a statement on the university's website, school officials said, "Because of the traffic congestion and disruptions anticipated in and around the Loop during the G-8/NATO summits, DePaul will close the Loop Campus from Friday, May 18, through Monday, May 21. There will be no access to Loop offices or classrooms. The Loop Campus will reopen on Tuesday, May 22."
School services will still be available to students at the school's Lincoln Park campus, as well as online and by phone. Classes at the Lincoln Park, O'Hare and suburban campuses will follow normal schedules.
Faculty has been informed that classes scheduled in the Loop campus during the summits can be relocated to classrooms at the Lincoln Park campus. Classes also can be delivered online, or teachers can create alternative assignments that students can pursue instead of a normal class.
DePaul's Loop campus is located at 1 E. Jackson Blvd., about 2 1/2 miles from McCormick Place, where the NATO and G8 summits will be held. In addition to the thousands of foreign dignitaries and others attending the meetings, the summits are expected to draw thousands of protesters who plan marches and rallies near the summits, as well as in downtown Chicago.
Although detailed security plans for the summits have not been announced, it is expected some sections of downtown and areas near McCormick Place will be closed to most traffic during the summits.
