Dempster Solid As Cubs Beat Dodgers
Sunday, the Cubs played two split squad games - a loss to the Reds and a win against the Dodgers. Ryan Dempster and Marlon Byrd were once again the stars of the game.
Ryan Dempster made progress toward his opening day start with four solid innings, Marlon Byrd had three hits and the split-squad Chicago Cubs defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 in 10 innings Sunday.
Rookie D.J. LeMahieu hit a game-ending home run. With the teams running out of pitchers, the game was to end after the 10th no matter what happened. But LeMahieu connected against Luis Vazquez after Bobby Scales led off the inning with a bloop single.
Dempster, making his second start, gave up a run on three hits and struck out three. Cubs closer Carlos Marmol struck out three in the fifth.
Byrd has four multihit efforts in six games this spring.
