Delays On Metra After Weekend Derailment
ELGIN, Ill. (CBS) -- Metra trains are running again in Elgin, but there are delays Monday morning after a freight train jumped the tracks.
Metra's Milwaukee District West line outbound train nos. 2201, 2203 and morning inbound train nos. 2222 and 2226 were expected to be approximately 20 minutes delayed due to necessary track repairs at the derailment site, according to the Metra website.
Workers are expected to complete repairs on the track on Tuesday.
Eight cars derailed just before 2 p.m. Sunday on Metra's Milwaukee District West line -- a Canadian Pacific Railroad line -- at Raymond Street and Purify Drive near the entrance to the Fox River Water Reclamation District plant.
Emergency personnel received two calls reporting the westbound Canadian Pacific train had derailed, according to an Elgin police release. Responding personnel found the cars off the track and in a nearby ditch, the release said.
Canadian Pacific spokesman Jeff Johnson said seven of the cars were carrying coils and the other cornstarch.
The 71-car train was carrying some hazardous materials, but none of those cars derailed, authorities said. Johnson said there were no potentially dangerous commodities involved in the incident, and would only speak about derailed cars.
Police said nobody was injured, and Johnson said there is no public safety concern.
Elgin police closed Raymond Street between Bluff City Boulevard and Kenyon Road and St. Charles Street from Elgin Avenue to Kenyon Road.
The Elgin Fire Department, Canadian Pacific and Metra officials are on the scene investigating Sunday night. The fire department is assessing any potential hazardous materials situation, according to Elgin spokeswoman Sue Olafson.
Johnson said a cause will not be released until the investigation is complete.
