Delany: College Football Playoff Won't Start A Year Early
By Adam Hoge-
ROSEMONT, Ill. (CBS) Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany expects the new college football playoff to be finalized by Jan. 1, but he ruled out the possibility of the new four-team tournament starting next season.
"There's no discussion it would be a year early," Delany said Thursday at Big Ten Basketball Media Day outside Chicago. "I think the worst thing we could probably do is rush it and not have the committee done properly, not have the game bid properly."
The playoff will instead start as scheduled in the 2014-15 season and Delany said the new selection committee can use next year as a trial run.
As for who will serve on the selection committee, Delany said he supports current athletic directors being a part of the group.
The commissioner hinted that the committee might not be finalized until the winter or even spring, but he did say most of the playoff details should be finalized by the end of the year.
"I would say sort of by the first of the year everything should be sort of put together and all the knowns will be total and the unknowns will be eliminated," he said. "We're working on revenue sharing, ESPN negotiations, and whether or not there will be a seventh bowl or not."
