Degree In Education Leads To Career Outside Of A Classroom For Chicago COO

Oftentimes, when people think about career options in the field of education, the first position that comes to mind is something involving the classroom. However, Lauren Herskovic is a great example of how one can obtain a degree in education without being tied down to only the classroom. As COO of Admissionado, an education consulting and mentoring company based in Chicago, Lauren can offer some great advice on some of the other career options in education.

How does your background in education relate to your current position?

"I originally studied Secondary Education in college, since my life plan was to become a high school English teacher. I loved the idea of working with students, and inspiring them through reading and writing. But once I graduated and got into the classroom, I realized it wasn't the right fit for me. Admissionado gave me the opportunity to work in the education space, without being tied down by the bureaucracy of our education system."

What advice can you offer others looking to go into this field?

"My position is two-fold. On the one hand, I'm working in education, and on the other, I'm working in management. For those who want to get into the education field, I'd recommend taking as much time as you can in college to actually get out there and experience education firsthand. It's one thing to learn how to be a teacher in the classroom; it's quite another to experience it in the field."

How has your education helped to achieve overall success in your field?

"My education helped me in more unconventional ways, which I think is the case for most people. What really contributed to my success was being surrounded by such a diverse group of people in college (economically, ethnically, politically, etc.), and learning how to interact and work with them successfully. I learned how to express my ideas and also how to be open to other perspectives; I learned how to throw away any differences in order to work together, I learned how to identify individual strengths and maximize them to achieve a goal."
