Suspect in custody after missing woman found dead in Logan Square
CHICAGO (CBS)-- A suspect is in custody, after a woman who went missing was found dead inside a Logan Square home.
Police said, around 8:30 p.m. Monday, a woman was found dead inside a home in the 2000 block of North Kimball Avenue.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the woman found dead was Brittany Battaglia, 33, who had been missing since Friday, and lives only about a block away.
The last time anyone had heard from Brittany, she told her roommate she was heading to the same place the body was found.
Her brother AJ Battaglia said Brittany was in some type of relationship with the man who lived in the apartment where she was found dead, adding that she went to see him on Friday. AJ said he never heard from Brittany after that, until police called the family Monday night, telling them that she had been found inside an apartment building.
"You should see how many people reached out to say how great of a person she was," AJ said. "You kind of never think your sister is going to be taken from you so soon. So, I mean, she was just a very nice person. She got along with everybody. She tried to see the good in everybody; it doesn't matter who you are."
AJ said his parents are heading to Chicago on Tuesday to formally identify Brittany at the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
"It just sucks that she'll never get to become a mother, or get married, you know?" AJ said.
Police confirmed one person was in custody and charges were pending late Tuesday morning as Area 5 detectives conduct a homicide investigation.
CBS 2 is not identifying the person while charges are pending, but Battaglia's family identified the man as the same person Battaglia was dating, a 34-year-old registered sex offender, according to state records and court documents. He had been previously charged with attempted murder and sexual assault using a weapon back in 2009, around the same time he was added to the registry.
"I hope this guy rots," AJ said. "I hope he never sees the light of day ever again. I talked to this man myself yesterday and it's just crazy. I mean we knew, we all thought this guy had something to do with it and he was playing dumb."
