STREAMWOOD, Ill. (STMW) -- A Saturday autopsy determined an infant boy found in a garbage can at a northwest suburban Salvation Army store Friday afternoon was strangled.
The baby died of strangulation and the death was ruled a homicide, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Streamwood police and paramedics responded to a call from the Salvation Army store in the 1000 block of South Barrington Road after the infant boy was found unresponsive, a release from Streamwood police said.
The infant, which appeared to be full-term newborn, was found in the trash receptacle of a public washroom and was pronounced dead on the scene, the release said. He was 18-inches long, the release said.
Police believe the mother gave birth between 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Friday in the washroom and may have entered the store with another woman and child, the release said.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen the mother -- described as a 5-feet-1 to 5-feet-4 Hispanic woman between the ages of 14 and 25 -- to call police. She is thin with dark brown hair worn in a pony-tail, the release said. She was wearing a purple hooded sweatshirt, dark sweatpants, a lime green jacket, suede boots and had a large purple or red purse with her, the release said.
Anyone who has information should call the Investigations Division at (630) 736-3700 or the Crime Tip Line at (630) 736-3719.
