Davis: May The Best Candidate Win

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.) says he and fellow mayoral candidate Carol Moseley Braun simply hope the best person gets elected.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Mary Frances Bragiel reports, when state Sen. Rev. James Meeks (D-Ill.) dropped out of the race last week, he urged other African-American candidates to do the same and rally around a single consensus candidate.

Rev. Meeks said in a statement announcing the decision that Chicago's African-Americans "need to speak with one voice."

Now, U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.), who accepted an endorsement from the Indo American Democratic Association, says the senator's remark was misinterpreted.

"I think what he is saying is that he is open, as many of us had hoped at the very beginning, that we would have a unified community," Davis said.

Davis claims he spoke to mayoral candidate Carol Moseley Braun and both agreed that the hope is to have the best candidate get elected.

Meeks has said that he has no plans to endorse anyone.
