Dart Pushes Suburbs To Sign Up For Gun-Tracing Program
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart wants all suburban police departments in the county to be part of a federal tracing program for guns seized during crimes.
Suburbs Not Tracing Guns
WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, the sheriff's office says there are three dozen suburban police departments in Cook County that do not take advantage of a program called E-Trace.
It's a federal program designed to help detectives try to figure out if confiscated weapons have been used in other crimes.
A sheriff's spokesman tells WBBM Newsradio that the sheriff's office has sent letters to those suburban police departments, asking them to start using E-Trace.
Recently, sheriff's officials found more than 100 seized guns piled all over an evidence room in the Robbins Police Department.
There was no evidence of record keeping nor tracing the guns' histories.
