Daley, Emanuel Meet For Breakfast
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Richard M. Daley and Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel had breakfast together Monday morning, for a talk about the big transition coming in May.
Emanuel spokesman Ben LaBolt said in a news release that the mayor and mayor-elect discussed the challenges facing the city, and agreed to work jointly on the transition process.
They spoke for more than an hour at Le Peep, 1000 W. Washington Blvd., Emanuel said.
"Mayor-elect Emanuel is grateful for Mayor Daley's offer of coordination and cooperation as the city enters a new chapter," LaBolt said in the release.
Emanuel won the mayoral election this past Tuesday with 55 percent of the vote. He won an outright majority and came in far ahead of his next closest challenger, Gery Chico, who had 24 percent.
Daley says he expects a number of department heads to help with the transition and even stay on, at least temporarily, under the new administration. Among the department heads is Police Supt. Jody Weis, whose contract expires Tuesday.
Emanuel has signaled he's not inclined to keep Weis as top cop.
Last week, Emanuel named his transition team, which includes Museum of Science and Industry chief executive officer and McPier Chairman David Mosena, former Daley aide Sarah Pang and the Rev. Byron Brazier, pastor of the South Side's Apostolic Church of God, among others.
