The proposal to raise the personal income rate by 2.25 % and the corporate rate to 8.4% has stunned and angered taxpayers, including Mayor Daley.
"Everybody needs revenue. We hear that all the time. Everybody wants more in government, but the taxpayers are saying 'I only have so much in my pocket. How much more can you take out of my pocket?' So, you have to balance that," Daley Said.
The Mayor said cutting inefficiency and waste in government is the logical way to help ease the budget problems, instead of raising taxes.
House members return to Springfield Sunday, the Senate on Monday.
Some lawmakers question whether the votes exist to pass the plan. Republican lawmakers believe the increases will drive jobs, and employers out of Illinois.
