"Da Coach" Teaming With Vienna Beef To Sell Ditka Sausages
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mike Ditka and Vienna Beef; it could be a sausage marriage made in Chicago heaven.
WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports Vienna Beef and former Bears coach and player Mike Ditka are teaming up on some new dinner sausages that have some real heft to them.
The sausages measure 8 inches long and weigh 1/3 pound each. They come in two varieties: hot beef Polish sausage, and chicken sausage with mozzarella and sun-dried tomatoes.
Ditka calls them "monster sausages Chicago can be proud of."
For years, Ditka and sausage went hand-in-hand on the Saturday Night Live "Superfans" sketches, parodying Bears fans' love of "Da Coach" and sausage.
Vienna Beef said the Ditka sausages are an attempt to capitalize on the growing demand for dinner sausages.
They'll be served in Ditka's restaurants, and sell online for $49.95 per 5-pound box. They also will sell at local Jewel and Mariano's grocery stores, and other Chicago area stores.
