D.C. Holiday Postpones Tax Day

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- This is April 15, the day taxes are normally due – but a holiday has moved the deadline to Monday.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Mary Frances Bragiel reports, the bonus for tax payers is the result of what's called Emancipation Day, technically April 16, but is being observed Friday in Washington, D.C.

The act celebrates the freeing of slaves in the district, signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862. The Emancipation Proclamation, which declared the end of slavery for those in Confederate states, was signed nearly 9 months later.

Under the IRS Tax Code, filing deadlines cannot fall on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday.
