Ill. Senate President's Son Pleads Guilty To DUI
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A son of Illinois Senate President John Cullerton pleaded guilty to driving drunk after drawing attention last spring for getting a DUI while operating a state vehicle in Chicago.
According to the Cook County state's attorney, in addition to misdemeanor driving under the influence, 27-year-old Garritt M. Cullerton also pleaded guilty Friday to an improper lane usage citation.
Cook County Circuit Judge Sharon Johnson sentenced Cullerton to two years of conditional discharge. He was also ordered to perform 240 hours of community service, seek treatment for alcohol abuse and pay a $1,250 fine.
Cullerton was pulled over after midnight April 18 in a vehicle registered to the state Senate. He had a blood-alcohol level higher than Illinois' legal limit of 0.08.
Cullerton's attorney, George Livas, was not immediately available for comment.
The elder Cullerton, a champion of safe-driving initiatives as a lawmaker, previously told CBS 2 his son did not have permission to drive the state vehicle. The younger Cullerton had past brushes with the law.
