Cubs Unveil Plans For New Baseball Academy In Dominican Republic
(CBS) Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts is in the Dominican Republic and unveiled renderings Thursday of a new baseball academy the team is going to build in the baseball rich country.
Encompassing 50 acres of land, the academy will be the largest baseball academy in the Dominican Republic. It will house players and serve as an educational center, while allowing major league and minor league players to train year-round.
The facility will be located in the town of La Gina, about 15 minutes from the airport and 30 minutes from Santo Domingo. It will serve players from across the world, not just the Dominican Republic.
The academy will have four fields, one of which will be artificial turf, four batting cages, eight bullpens, a weight room and two locker rooms. There will also be theatre and a video room. 80 players and eight staff members will be able to stay at the facility at any given time.
It is scheduled to be completed in 12-18 months.
