Cubs Still Looking To Solidify Identity
CHICAGO (WSCR) Through the fist 18 games of the season, the Chicago Cubs are 9-9, and haven't won or lost more than two games in a row.
So what's the identity of this relatively young team so far?
"I have no clue," outfielder Marlon Byrd said on the Mully and Hanley Show. "We're a good team, and we're going to be there in the end. Right now we're still trying to solidify, gosh, our offense and our defense, and our pitching staff. We have one guy that's basically set in our lineup, as far as where he's going to be, and that's Aramis Ramirez. And our pitching staff, one, two and three [starters], they're going to be set. Our closer is set and our setup guy is set.
"There are a lot of things that are going to evolve with this team as time goes. We need [Andrew] Cashner to get back, we need [Randy] Wells to get back, we need everyone to get healthy. I need to do a better job of hitting in the three-hole, or they're going to kick my butt out of there."

So far this season, all of the National League Central teams have pretty much played the same. The Cincinnati Red and St. Louis Cardinals are tied for the division lead, and are both only a game over .500. So the fact that the Cubs are still searching for an identity shouldn't worry the fans.
"There are a lot of things that need to come," Byrd said. "Again, it's a little bit too early to say your identity of this team. You try to solidify that in spring training, but that's not the way it works. Spring training is spring training, the season is the real deal. I want to say mid-May, hopefully, people will really see the true Cubs."
