Wells Named Cubs' Fourth Starter
On Friday, Chicago Cubs manager Mike Quade named Randy Wells as the team's fourth starter. With four of the five starting slots filled, the final spot comes down to Andrew Cashner or Carlos Silva.
Last season Wells went 8-14 as a starter with a 4.26 ERA and 1.40 WHIP.
The announcement of the fifth starter spot will probably garner more interest than Friday's announcement.
"Cashner is on the club," Quade said. "What we don't know for sure yet is [his spot]. We're looking hard at him as the fifth starter, but there are other scenarios there where that doesn't materialize. So basically, we're looking for one pitcher."
Silva was having a miserable spring training up until Tuesday's game agaisnt the Los Angeles Dodgers. Silva entered the game having allowed 20 earned runs in his previous 11 1/3 innings, but on Tuesday allowed only one run and three hits in six innings
Quade also announced that James Russell and Jeff Samardzija have made the opening day roster.
