Cubs Exhibit Mounted On California's Catalina Island
SANTA CATALINA, Calif. (CBS) -- Walk from one end of the Wrigleyville or Lakeview neighborhood to the other, and you won't find a Cubs museum. Walk from one end of Chicago to the other, and you still won't find a Cubs museum.
But thousands of miles away on Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California, you will find a Cubs museum exhibit.
The Los Angeles Times reports the Catalina Island Museum, located on the ground floor of Avalon's Casino on the old resort island, is featuring a temporary Cubs exhibit called "The Boys in Blue," which runs through April 30. The Cubs trained on Catalina Island from 1921 until 1951 when they moved to Mesa, Ariz.
The exhibit features a collection of old Cubs programs, rosters, uniforms, film strips and photos. It runs through April 30. Ernie "Mr. Cub" Banks was among the first visitors when the museum opened on Feb. 5, the L.A. Times reported.
The Cubs began using Catalina Island for spring training after former team owner William Wrigley Jr. bought most of the land on the island, according to the Web site SantaCatalinaIsland.com.
If you can't make it to Catalina Island, there is a Chicago Baseball Museum in the works that plans to develop a series of exhibits on the Cubs and White Sox.
