Cubs Cut Ties With Reliever Veras
(CBS) The Cubs have designated right-handed reliever Jose Veras for assignment, they announced Tuesday afternoon, ending his tenure his the team.
Veras was 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA in 12 appearances for Chicago this season. The Cubs owe Veras $3.85 million this season and a $150,000 buyout for 2015, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The Cubs also placed catcher Welington Castillo (.242, five homers, 21 RBIs) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 2, with left rib cage inflammation. In place of those two, Chicago activated closer Hector Rondon (1.59 ERA, six saves) from the paternity leave list and called up catcher Eli Whiteside from Triple-A Iowa.
Whiteside last played in the big leagues in 2012. In 33 games this season at Iowa, he's batting .171 with three homers and 13 RBIs.
