Cubs Receive Prospect From Red Sox To Complete Epstein Deal

MESA, Ariz. (CBS) – The Cubs acquired first baseman prospect Jair Bogaerts from the Red Sox Thursday to complete the compensation deal for Theo Epstein.
Bogaerts, from Aruba, is just 19 years old. He hit .288 in the Dominican Summer League last year.
Meanwhile, Chris Carpenter, who the Cubs sent to Boston in the exchange, is set to have elbow surgery Thursday. General manager Jed Hoyer said the Cubs had no knowledge of any arm issues for Carpenter and that the Cubs were surprised when they heard about the problem.
"It's obviously something you never want to happen, Hoyer said. "In any trade, you want both sides to feel good. That's not a great thing to have happen to Chris or the Red Sox."
Hoyer said the Cubs were "looking into it" but also said he didn't expect it to affect the player to be named later. Less than an hour later, the Bogaerts deal was announced.
The Cubs still have to work out compensation with the Padres for Hoyer making the jump to Chicago, but the GM said that has not worked been worked out yet.
"Maybe we'll talk about it in Peoria today," he said with a laugh.
The Cubs play the Padres in Peoria, Ariz. at 3:05 p.m. CT.
