Cubs Come Close, Fall To Reds In Split Squad Game
The Chicago Cubs came within one run of the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, but couldn't overcome the one run deficit. The Reds' lefty Willis was injured, however, after tipping over a bat.
Dontrelle Willis left the Cincinnati Reds' 7-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs after spraining his right ankle.
Willis, trying to win a spot in the Reds' bullpen, was injured when he tripped over a bat while backing up home plate in the fifth inning. The big left-hander recorded just one out Saturday and was charged with four runs, two earned.
Cincinnati went ahead for good when Paul Janish scored on third baseman Aramis Ramirez's two-base throwing error in the seventh.
Jeremy Hermida and Chris Heisey hit solo homers off Cubs starter Carlos Silva, who allowed four runs in five innings.
Homer Bailey struck out five in four innings for Cincinnati, yielding one run and six hits.
The Cubs and Reds also played a split-squad game in Las Vegas.
