Cubs Can Hurt Cards Even If They Don't Sign Pujols
CHICAGO (WSCR) Albert Pujols is considered one of the best players in the history of baseball. He's played his entire 11-year career for the St. Louis Cardinals, but will be the biggest free agent in the history of the game during the offseason.
There were rumors that Pujols was asking for a 10-year contract, worth in the neighborhood of $300 million, that's a price tag that would likely be out of the Cardinals' range.
"I think the Cardinals are going to be pretty disciplined about what they're going to offer," Bernie Miklasz, of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, said on the Mully and Hanley Show. "I don't think they're going to go nine, 10 years, I mean they may go seven...I think they're going pretty much stick to their guns as far as the length of the contract."

The Chicago Cubs are one of the teams that are rumored to be interested in Pujols, and who also could afford to pay him the kind of money he might be looking to earn. And the more teams that get into the bidding, the tougher it will become for the Cardinals, or any other team, to sign Pujols.
"A lot of this will be dictated by a third party," Miklasz said. "That's where the Cubs could really give a headache to the Cardinals. If they just drive up the price, and make life miserable for the Cardinals that way, they could be a real annoyance. So Cubs fans, if nothing else, should root for that becuase they could still be a burr even if they don't get Pujols, they could succeed in kind of messing the Cardinals up a little bit."
