CHICAGO (CBS) The Cubs called up Chris Carpenter from Double-A Tennessee and activated Reed Johnson from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. Outfielder Tyler Colvin and pitcher Casey Coleman were sent down to Triple-A Iowa to make room on the roster.
Johnson hasn't played since May 26 because of back spasms and went hitless in two rehab games with the Iowa Cubs.
This is Carpenter's first stint with the Cubs as he was added to the 40-man roster. He was drafted in the third round of the 2008 draft and has been highly thought of by the organization ever since, especially after a stellar performance in the Arizona Fall League last year.
Unfortunately, Carpenter failed to seize a spot in the bullpen in spring training and has struggled in the minors this season. After posting a 6.41 ERA at Triple-A Iowa, he was demoted to Double-A Tennessee where he put a 4.38 ERA in 10 games.
