Esposito: Cubs Blown Out By Pirates 10-0

CHICAGO (CBS) - The Cubs managed only 3 hits off of Pirates starter Paul Maholm, who went the distance as the Bucs shut out the Cubs 10-0. Randy Wells came off the disabled list to make his first start since April 4th, but he took the loss, going only 4 innings while giving up 5 earned runs. The Pirates got home runs from Ronny Cedeno, Chris Snyder and Lyle Overbay to win their second straight at Wrigley, and their 15th road win of the season so far. Not bad for a team that won only 17 road games during the entire 2010 campaign.
Cubs manager Mike Quade didn't have many positives to talk about after the game, but he did say that Wells appeared to be completely healthy after the start, which was good long-term news for the team. Wells did strike out 7 Pirates but he threw 92 pitches, and he said that he should have been more aggressive against hitters instead of nibbling around the plate.
Alfonso Soriano doubled in the 5th to extend his hitting streak to 9 games, during which he is batting .353 with 1 HR, 6 RBI, and 5 runs scored.
Ryan Dempster faces Jeff Karstens in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
