Cubs Beat Diamondbacks, Cashner Leaves With Injury
There were a couple of firsts for the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. Andrew Cashner made his first career start and Tyler Colvin made his first career start at first base.
Both players did better than expected. Cashner went 5.1 innings allowing just two hits and one run, before leaving with what was described as shoulder stiffness.
Marlon Byrd had three hits, doubling in a key run in the seventh inning, and the Chicago Cubs held on for a 6-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
Byrd, who also scored a run, drove in pinch-hitter Jeff Baker with a one-out double to left off Sam Demel (1-1), giving Chicago a 5-4 lead after blowing a three-run advantage in the top of the seventh.
Diamondbacks reliever Joe Paterson walked Colvin with the bases loaded to force in an insurance run.
The Diamondbacks, losers of three in a row, erased a 4-1 deficit in the top of the seventh. Willie Bloomquist drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single.
Chicago right-hander Andrew Cashner left after 5 1-3 innings in his professional debut because of tightness in his right shoulder.
James Russell (1-0) worked 1 2-3 for the win.
