Cubs Acquire Cincinnati's Travis Wood For Sean Marshall
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Cubs on Friday acquired left-handed pitcher Travis Wood and two others from the Cincinnati Reds, in a trade for pitcher Sean Marshall.
The Cubs acquired Wood, outfielder Dave Sappelt, and minor league infield prospect Ronald Torreyes.
Wood, 24, is 11-10 with 11-10 with a 4.18 ERA in 39 games during his two Major League seasons with the Reds.
He was selected by the Reds in the second-round draft out of high school in 2005, and made his Major League debut in 2010 at the age of 23. He went 5-4 with a 3.51 ERA in his first year, during which Cincinnati won the NL Central Division.
This past season, Wood split his time between the Reds and the Triple-A minors in Louisville. In the majors, he went 6-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 22 appearances, and in the minors, he went 2-3 with a 5.33 ERA in 10 starts.
Sappelt, also 24, was the Minor League Hitter of the Year for Cincinnati at 2010, and made his Major League debut last year. He batted .243, with eight doubles and 14 runs in 38 games following his call-up Aug. 7. That day, he made his Major League debut at Wrigley Field.
Torreyes, 19, has 38 doubles, 17 triples, eight home runs, 124 runs scored, 87 RBI and 37 stolen bases during his 158 games in the Reds' minor league system.
As for Marshall, 29, he leaves the Cubs with a record of 32-40, seven saves, and a 3.96 ERA in 292 appearances.
