CTA Yellow Line Trains Evacuated After Hitting Fallen Tree On Tracks; Line Shut Down Afterward
EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) -- Passengers on the CTA Yellow Line had to walk the tracks Monday night after their train hit a tree in its path.
It happened late Monday evening.
The Evanston Fire Department said there were two trains on the tracks and both struck the tree.
Witnesses described the moment of impact.
"I just heard a loud boom and just a lot of crazy noises – metal bending and things and glass shattering," said passenger Cynthia Talley Muhammad.
"And then all of a sudden, there was a loud crash and the train just came to an abrupt stop, and we find out we hit a tree, or a tree fell and hit it," said passenger Evangeline Griffin.
Authorities said 11 people were on the trains, including two Chicago Transit Authority conductors. Everyone was able to walk to safety.
Following the incident, the Chicago Transit Authority said shuttle buses were replacing service on the line from Howard to Dempster-Skokie, and the No. 97 Skokie bus can also be used as an alternative.
