CTA: Warehouse Has Millions In Spare Parts To Auction Off

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago Transit Authority took the opportunity of a quiet Presidents' Day to toot its own horn about savings to come in a massive warehouse.

As WBBM Newsradio's John Cody reports, the massive CTA warehouse is located at 901 W. Division St. on Goose Island, steps from condos and houses in the blossoming area where the Cabrini-Green public housing development once stood.

Inside the warehouse are $74 million worth of spare parts, half of which haven't moved in two years, and some of which won't ever move.

"The bus heater assemblies you see arrived at the warehouse in 2006, to be used as replacement for our 6000-series buses," Claypool said.

Six years later, the heater assemblies are completely useless, he said.

"The last 6000-series buses were removed from service two years ago, and today, we have 82 heater assemblies worth more than $170,000 that we have no use for," he said.

Claypool estimates millions will be saved when the CTA auctions off unused stuff and hires private consultants to show how the CTA can buy just what it needs, when the agency needs it.
