CTA: Train Operators Will Still Wait For Rushing Passengers
CHICAGO (CBS) -- CTA riders can breathe a little easier now when they spot an 'L' car that appears to be ready to leave without them as they're racing to the platform.
As WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, Chicago Transit Authority rail manager Marlene Taylor heard from agency president Forrest Claypool about trains he has seen dilly-dallying at stations when they should be moving.
So, according to CTA spokesman Brian Steele, Taylor sent out an e-mail to her subordinates that misinterpreted what Claypool wanted and appeared to change CTA policy about waiting for passengers who are running for the 'L.'
But the policy has not been changed, Steele says.
"Our policy has been, and remains to be, that people running for the train to board before the doors closed, the operator will wait for them," Steele said.
The head of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308, which represents CTA train operators, says the e-mail caused all sorts of confusion for workers and frustrated commuters who were left behind.
