CTA Opens Cermak-McCormick Place Green Line Station

CHICAGO (CBS/STMW) -- A new station on the CTA's Green Line opened Sunday morning on the Near South Side.

The Cermak-McCormick Place station opened for service at 5 a.m. at 12 E. Cermak Rd., according to the CTA's website.

The new station provides access to McCormick Place, Motor Row and other destinations on the Near South Side, according to the transit agency.

At a ribbon cutting on Monday, Mayor Emanuel said the new state-of-the-art station fills a needed gap in service.

"This station now changes the economics both for McCormick Place…and most importantly for the residents of South Loop who now can conveniently get from home to work or anywhere they need to go from neighborhood to neighborhood in the city of Chicago," he said.

3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell said developers were already moving to bring new business to the area.
"We have development interest for the northeast corner of Wabash and 22nd we've got some development interest at the old White Castle site," she said.

The project was paid for by Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds.

It includes three entrances — one on the north side of Cermak, one on the south side of Cermak, and one at 23rd Street. The station features an "island platform" including full canopy coverage, heaters and benches, according to the agency.

It also includes bike racks, bright lighting and security cameras, new signage including digital displays, and farecard vending machines at all entrances.
