CTA To Begin Reconstruction Of Loop Tracks This Weekend
CHICAGO (CBS) -- CTA Brown, Orange and Pink Line riders are in for delays and reroutes this weekend, as the CTA begins the latest phase of track reconstruction on the Loop elevated train tracks.
Preparation for the 'L' track renewal began months ago. The disruption this weekend is the first of a series, mostly on weekends, between now and late this fall.
From 9 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday, all Loop 'L' trains will be routed around the inner track of the Loop. Saturday and Sunday, nothing will run on the Wells or Van Buren legs of the Loop. Orange and Brown Line trains will run through between Kimball and Midway. Pink Line trains will terminate at the Roosevelt 'L' station -- normally used only by Red and Green Line trains -- then return to 54th/Cermak.
Green Line service will run normally. Purple Line trains do not operate downtown on weekends, so will not be affected.
Workers will be replacing track that was laid in the 1980s, has seen heavy use, and is near the end of its useful service life.
