CTA Offering Penny Rides On New Year's Eve
CHICAGO (CBS) -- With the new year comes an old deal from the CTA.
On New Year's Eve, transit riders will be able to take a train or a bus for one penny. The cheap ride will be in effect from 10 p.m. on New Year's Eve through 4 a.m. on New Year's Day.
The CTA has been providing the service for years as a safe alternative to driving or taking a cab on a night when a fair amount of drinking occurs.
However, riders will need to crack open their piggy banks for some pennies--no magnetic strip fare cards are allowed. Riders will be charged the full fare if they use their cards--and no refunds will be issued, the CTA said.
Signs will be posted on buses and at rail stations, reminding customers to not swipe or insert their fare cards during the penny ride period.
