Crash Leaves Car In Flames At Busy Matteson Intersection
MATTESON, Ill. (CBS) -- A car burst into flames early Monday in a crash at a major intersection in south suburban Matteson.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, information was not immediately available about injuries or even possible deaths in the accident at Vollmer Road and Cicero Avenue. But a tarp was placed over one of the cars, suggesting the worst.
The crash happened in the 4 a.m. hour, and one of the cars involved was hit so hard from behind that its fuel tank ruptured and it burst into flames. The car was left burnt to a crisp.
The other vehicle, a pickup truck, came to rest far down the roadway, and the whole front end was caved in.
Following the accident, Vollmer Road was closed from Interstate 57 to Treehouse Road, which is located about halfway between Cicero and Crawford avenues.
Cicero Avenue was also closed from Flossmoor Road to a spot north of Village Commons Drive. Police have been sending commuters on Cicero into a residential subdivision and out again as a detour.
The I-57 entrance and exit at Vollmer Road are also closed. Commuters are advised to use U.S. 30 (Lincoln Highway) as an alternate.
