Coyote Attacks Two Dogs In Glencoe
GLENCOE, Ill. (STMW) -- Police in north suburban Glencoe are now looking for the den of a coyote suspected of attacking two Maltese dogs in three days.
Both dogs were hospitalized after the attacks, April 28 on the 400 block of Lakeside Terrace, and May 1 on the 500 block of Sheridan Road – three blocks apart.
One of the dogs is back home, but the Sheridan Road dog remains in an area animal hospital.
Glencoe Animal Control Officer Katie Sweeney said Monday that she's looking for the coyote's trail along the lake. She has posted warnings in the area.
The coyote crossed an electric fence to try to get the Sheridan Road dog, which was in the yard with a bigger dog.
"Fortunately for him, I think his Labrador retriever buddy saved his life," Sweeney said.
"The other Maltese was grabbed in front of the owner ... playing outside in the front yard," she said. "The coyote is coming up from the bluff area somewhere. Not good."
The coyote could be hunting to provide for pups, since some of coyotes' springtime young are still in dens, she said. "Or it could be a solitary hunting coyote."
Glencoe has at times hired hunters to dispatch problem coyotes.
