Cowley: Sox, Cubs Have Right Managers In Place
(WSCR) With new managers on both sides of town, no one can know for sure what to expect.
Though neither the White Sox nor the Cubs have realistic hopes for winning a World Series in 2012, one baseball expert thinks Robin Ventura and Dale Sveum are the perfect managers for where each team is at.
"These are the right guys for right now," Cowley said. "That doesn't mean that these are the guys that bring trophies or win divisions. Maybe these are the guys that are the bridge to that. For what both teams needed and the culture that both teams wanted to change, I think these are perfect guys on both sides of town. I don't think they could have picked better selections. That's even taking all the stuff from the past out of it. It is what it is. You can't change that.

"On the South Side of town, you bring in a guy who is from the same school as Ozzie, he just went to different classes. On the North Side, you bring in a guy who is a little hard and a little tough. (He's) not the nice guy and not the bitter, old guy who is at the end of his career."
With few performing big-name players, the only way these teams can succeed is by grinding for nine inning each day
"When you don't have a lot of talent, you want a guy that stresses fundamentals," Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times told The Mully and Hanley Show. "That's how you're going to beat teams. You're not going to out-talent them. You have to grind them. That's the formula the Twins have used for years. Obviously they've added some talent with (Justin) Morneau and (Joe) Mauer, and they had (Johan) Santana and (Torii) Hunter back in the day. For the most part, it was a lot of guys who, for nine innings, would not stop. That's kind of the formula when you don't have the huge payroll and the talent to match that payroll. That's the formula you have to go with."
