Cousins Shot To Death While Sleeping In Gary Home
GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- The early morning shooting deaths of two Gary, Ind., cousins caps a week of violence centered around the home where they were sleeping when someone shot from the alley, the Post-Tribune is reporting.
Dontrell Wilson, 19, of the 4900 block of Washington Street in Gary, Ind., and his cousin, Frederick Stubbs, 18, of the 3900 block of Harrison Street in Gary, Ind., were both asleep in a bedroom at Wilson's house when the gunfire began about 5:20 a.m. The west side of the house was riddled with bullets, but no other occupants were wounded, police said.
Just 24 hours earlier, Darnell Washington, 23, who lives at the scene of the double homicide, reported that his car, a maroon Oldsmobile, was set on fire intentionally. Arson investigators said it appeared the fire started inside the car, and it appeared suspicious.
On June 6, Anthony Warlick, 25, who lives on Adams Street directly west of Wilson's home, said he was grazed by a bullet as he walked in the neighborhood about 6 p.m. He told police the suspects, who fired between seven and 12 shots, were standing in the alley near the house where the two men were killed. Warlick suffered a bruise on his thigh and refused medical treatment. Police collected "several spent shell casings in front of and the side of 4974 Washington St.," the police report states. Although Wednesday's victims were slain by bullets fired into the back of the house, the front also has several bullet holes, police said.
Wilson was charged in February, 2012, with maintaining a common nuisance and possession of marijuana for an arrest in Griffith. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to a misdemeanor and ordered to serve one year of probation. In March, he pleaded to a reduced charge stemming from a traffic stop by Lake County police who found he was carrying a handgun without a permit.
Residents in the area have reported suspicious activity in that area in recent weeks.
Wilson and Stubbs are the 18th and 19th homicides here this year. By this date in 2012, the city had recorded 16 violent deaths.
