Couple Proves It's Never Too Late For Love
GLENCOE, Ill. (CBS) – One Chicago-area couple proves it's never too late to find love.
Claire Blumenthal and Bernard Miller tied the knot Thursday at Am Shalom Synagogue in Glencoe.
Claire, 86, and 90-year-old Bernard have known each other through mutual friends since the 1940s.
Both married other people and were very happy. But 10 years ago, Claire's husband passed away. In 2008, Bernard's wife died. A mutual friend suggested the pair go on a date.
Now, they're getting married. Bernard followed tradition when proposing with a nearly 5-carat sapphire and diamond engagement ring.
"I did get on a knee," Bernard tells CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot.
Claire wasn't initially interested in actually walking down an aisle in an elaborate ceremony, but she relented.
"'Bernie said, 'We have to give the people a show,'" Claire says.
And what a show they planned, with 200 friends and members of the couple's extended family. Among them are numerous grandchildren and Claire's daughter, Winnetka attorney Marcia Fields, and son, Sidney Blumenthal, a former senior advisor to President Clinton.
Hillary Rodham Clinton even sent the couple a letter, congratulating them on their engagement.
"Whatever time we have, it's going to be wonderful," Claire says.
The couple will honeymoon in Sweden. They'll also be celebrating Bernard's son's 20th wedding anniversary by going to the island of Marstrand, just off the coast of Sweden.
