Couple Killed After Careening Off I-94 Overpass In Portage
PORTAGE, Ill. (STMW) -- A Canadian couple died in a one-car accident early Saturday when their car went off Interstate 94 and landed on a road beneath the highway, the Post-Tribune reports.
Indiana State Police said the preliminary crash investigation by Senior Trooper Lawrence McFarrin revealed that Isaac Acheampong, 62, of Ontario, was driving a 2014 Toyota Matrix westbound on Interstate 80/94 near mile marker 19.
For an unknown reason, the Toyota traveled off the north side of the interstate and continued to travel west, parallel to the highway, before hitting an embankment. The car went airborne across Jensen Drive and landed on the west side of the road after a drop of about 30 feet off the interstate. Jensen Drive runs north-south under the interstate.
Isaac Acheampong and his wife, Cecilia Acheampong, 53, died at the scene. The husband was still in the car, Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said; the wife was ejected from the vehicle.
A newspaper carrier discovered the car at 4:20 a.m. The time of the accident is not known, Harris said.
The crash is still under investigation, but police do not suspect the use of alcohol or narcotics in contributing to the crash.
The Portage Police Department, the Portage Fire Department and Porter County EMS assisted with the accident.
