County Treasurer Works To Recover Money Overpaid To South Suburb
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas says the State's Attorney is working to recover almost $7 million her office overpaid to the City of Country Club Hills and has yet to get back.
As WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports, the way this situation arose is a little complicated. South suburban Country Club Hills had to borrow money to cover late property tax revenue, and when Cook County paid off the loan and reimbursed the suburb, it actually paid about $6.6 million too much.
Pappas will not talk about problems getting the money back now that the State's Attorney is involved, but she acknowledges there were some goofs.
"Look – we deal with $8 billion a year; $8 billion times 20 years, it is -- $60 billion gone in and out of here," Pappas said. "When another office tells us, 'Send us $6 million' to them, and we do. It was obviously a clerical error."
Pappas says her best guess is the money will be returned.
